Why finishing matters
Hanging puts the board on the wall. Finishing hides the joints, fasteners, and corners. Done well, you see a flat, even surface. Done poorly, you see seams after the paint dries. KC Drywall tapes, muds, sands, and prepares drywall for the next step: paint, or texture then paint.
What the work usually includes

Finish levels, without the jargon overload
Drywall finishing is often described as Levels 1 through 5. The right level depends on the room, the lighting, the texture or paint, the plans, and the look you want. Not every project needs the same finish.
- Level 1. Basic joint treatment. Tape is embedded in compound at the joints. Fastener heads are not finished. On the job this is often called fire-taping, though Level 1 is a bit broader than that nickname: it is functional, not decorative, and is typical in concealed or fire-rated areas.
- Level 2. The joints get additional coverage, and fastener heads get a coat of compound. This is common where appearance is not the priority, such as a garage or a surface that will be covered.
- Level 3. More complete finishing, with the joints and fasteners built up and smoothed. This is the usual preparation for heavier textures.
- Level 4. Typical finished drywall for many painted interiors. Joints and fasteners are fully finished and sanded, suitable for a lot of flat paint and common wall and ceiling work.
- Level 5. The highest smooth-wall finish. After a full Level 4, a skim coat is applied over the entire surface so the wall is more uniform. That extra step helps where smooth walls, strong lighting, or demanding finishes can show joints and imperfections.
When you request a quote, say how the room will be lit and whether you want a smooth wall or a texture. That is more useful than asking for a level number unless your plans already specify one.
Finishing after someone else hung the board
Sometimes the hanging is already done and the remaining work is tape and finish. That is a normal request. The quote depends on how the board was hung: joint layout, fastener pattern, and whether corners are ready. Photos help.
